Excel to XML in three steps

1

Open your Excel file

Drag and drop an .xlsx or .xls file. TangoText reads your headers and data instantly — no upload, no waiting.

2

Arrange your columns

Rename, reorder or exclude columns as needed. Each column becomes an element in the XML, and dash-separated names such as address-city build nested elements.

3

Download your XML

Click Generate Output. TangoText produces well-formed XML, a <data> root with one <record> per row, and you download it directly to your computer.

Built for real data transformation work

🗂️

Element names and nesting

Each column’s output name becomes its element name. Use dash-separated names for nested XML, and add optional header and trailer rows.

🔄

Format Values

Standardise dates, numbers, and text before they appear in the XML. Convert mixed date formats to ISO 8601, fix number formatting, clean up case — all available free.

🔍

TangoSense scan

Automatically flags PII columns, mixed date formats, blanks, and duplicate IDs in your spreadsheet before you export — one-click fixes included.

✓

TangoCheck validation

Run 30 rule types against your data — required fields, value lists, numeric ranges, regex — before writing the XML. Catch errors at the source.

🎭

Data masking

Mask sensitive fields before writing XML. Scramble values, keep their format, or hide all but the last characters. Repeatable masking available with a passphrase.

💾

Reusable templates

Save your XML structure, column mappings, and Format Values rules as a template. Reprocess next week's file in seconds (Solo & Team plans).

📊

Excel workbooks

TangoText reads .xlsx and .xls files. If a workbook has several sheets, the first sheet is loaded and you are told so, so move the sheet you need to the front.

🔒

Zero-upload privacy

All processing runs in JavaScript in your browser. Your spreadsheet is never sent to any server — ever.

Clean your data before it enters the XML

XML consumers — APIs, downstream systems, data warehouses — expect consistent formats. Format Values normalises your data on the way out. Free on all plans.

📅

Date normalization

Mar 25, 2024 / 2024/03/25 / 25-Mar-2024 all become the same output — 2024-03-25 or any format you choose.

🔢

Number formatting

Strip commas and currency symbols, set decimal precision, or add zero-padding for consistent numeric fields in XML.

🔤

Text cleanup

Trim whitespace, normalize case, remove unwanted characters. " jane SMITH " → "Jane Smith".

📞

Code reformatting

Phone → (416) 555-1234. SSN/SIN → 123-45-6789. Postal codes to their canonical forms.

Common questions

Is my Excel file uploaded to a server?
No. TangoText reads your file locally in the browser and converts it entirely in JavaScript, so nothing leaves your machine.
What Excel formats are supported?
TangoText supports .xlsx and .xls files, as well as CSV, TSV, pipe- and semicolon-delimited, TXT, XML, JSON and fixed-length files. For a workbook with several sheets, the first sheet is loaded.
Can I control the XML structure — element names and nesting?
Yes, within limits. Each column becomes an element named after its output field name (spaces and symbols are replaced with underscores), inside a <data> root with one <record> per row. You can rename, reorder and exclude columns, and use dash-separated names such as address-city to build nested elements. TangoText does not currently write XML attributes or let you rename the root and row elements.
What is TangoSense?
TangoSense automatically scans your file when you load it and surfaces data issues worth fixing: PII columns (emails, phones, SSN/SIN, card numbers), mixed date formats, blank cells, repeated IDs, and likely typos. Each suggestion applies with one click. Nothing is uploaded.
Can I validate the data before converting to XML?
Yes. TangoCheck (Solo & Team plans) lets you run 30 rule types — required fields, date formats, numeric ranges, value lists, duplicate combination detection, regex — against your data before export. Review the problems by row, field and value, then export the XML.
Can I save my XML mapping and reuse it?
Yes. On Solo and Team plans, you can save your complete configuration — column-to-element mappings, Format Values settings, masking rules — as a reusable template. Team plans allow up to 5 users to share templates.
