CSV to XML in three steps

1

Load your CSV or Excel file

Drop the file into TangoText. It reads your headers and data instantly — nothing is sent to any server.

2

Arrange your columns

Rename, reorder, or exclude columns. Each column becomes an element in your XML, and dash-separated names such as address-city can build nested elements.

3

Download your XML file

Click Generate Output. TangoText produces well-formed XML, a <data> root with one <record> per row, and you download it directly to your computer.

More than a simple converter

🗂️

Control your element names

Each column’s output name becomes its element name. Use dash-separated names to build nested XML, and add optional header and trailer rows.

🔄

Format Values

Normalize dates, fix number formatting, clean text case, and reformat phone/SSN/postal codes before writing the XML. Available free on all plans.

🔍

TangoSense auto-scan

Automatically detects PII columns, mixed date formats, blanks, repeated IDs, and likely typos when your file loads — one-click to fix each one.

✓

TangoCheck validation

Run 30 rule types against your data before converting — required fields, value lists, numeric ranges, regex patterns, and more. Catch errors at the source.

🎭

Mask sensitive fields

Scramble values, keep their format, or hide all but the last characters. Use a repeatable passphrase for consistent output across multiple runs.

💾

Reusable templates

Save your XML mapping, Format Values settings, and masking rules as a template. Re-run next month's export in seconds (Solo & Team plans).

📊

CSV and Excel input

Convert from CSV, TSV, pipe- or semicolon-delimited, TXT, Excel (.xlsx, .xls), JSON, XML or fixed-length files — all read locally in your browser without uploading.

🔒

Zero-upload privacy

All processing runs in JavaScript in your browser tab. No server ever sees your data.

Deliver clean, consistent data in your XML

APIs and downstream systems that consume your XML expect consistent formats. Format Values standardises your fields on the way out — no pre-processing step required. Free on all plans.

📅

Dates

Normalize multiple input formats to a single output — ISO 8601 (2024-03-25) or any format your target expects.

🔢

Numbers

Remove currency symbols, set decimal precision, apply zero-padding. Consistent numeric fields, every time.

🔤

Text

Title case, upper, lower. Trim extra spaces, remove unwanted characters. " jane SMITH " → "Jane Smith".

📞

Codes

Phone → (416) 555-1234. SSN/SIN → 123-45-6789. Postal codes to canonical forms.

Common questions about CSV to XML conversion

Is my CSV file uploaded to a server?
No. TangoText reads and converts your file entirely in JavaScript running in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server, so your file stays on your own machine.
Can I control the XML structure — element names and nesting?
Yes, within limits. Each column becomes an element named after its output field name (spaces and symbols are replaced with underscores), inside a <data> root with one <record> per row. You can rename, reorder and exclude columns, and use dash-separated names such as address-city to build nested elements. TangoText does not currently write XML attributes or let you rename the root and row elements.
What is Format Values?
Format Values lets you standardise field values before they appear in the XML: normalize mixed date formats, fix number formatting (strip currency symbols, set decimal places), clean text case, and reformat phone numbers, SSN/SIN, and postal codes. Available on all plans, including Free.
What is TangoSense?
TangoSense automatically scans your file when you load it and flags: PII columns (emails, phone numbers, SSN/SIN, credit card numbers), mixed date formats, blank cells, repeated IDs, and likely typos. Each finding is one-click to apply and fully undoable. Nothing is uploaded.
Can I validate the data before converting to XML?
Yes. TangoCheck (Solo & Team plans) lets you run 30 rule types against your data before export — required fields, date formats, numeric ranges, value lists, duplicate combination detection, regex patterns, and more. Review the problems by row, field and value, then export the XML.
Can I save my XML mapping and reuse it?
Yes. On Solo and Team plans, save your complete configuration — column-to-element mapping, element names, Format Values, and masking settings — as a reusable template. Team plans allow up to 5 users to share the same template library.
Is Excel to XML also supported?
Yes. TangoText accepts CSV, TSV, pipe- and semicolon-delimited, TXT, Excel (.xlsx, .xls), JSON, XML and fixed-length files as input, and can convert all of them to XML. You can also convert to JSON, fixed-length, TSV, or differently delimited CSV from the same tool. For Excel workbooks with several sheets, TangoText loads the first sheet.
